History

The foundations of the Viennese Bluegrass group Midlife Grass go back to Christmas, 1995, when Wolfgang Motzko and Werner Mörth produced the CD "For our Friends Only" as a Chistmas gift for numerous friends. Katarina and Helmut Mitteregger, members of Europe’s top-Bluegrass band Nugget provided energetic support, as did Werner Kuhn (Captain Kuno). Werner Mörth contributed his love of folk music while Wolfgang, a founding member of Nugget back in 1975, returned to his musical roots.

The sheer enjoyment of making music together provided the impetus for some of the musicians, namely Wolfgang, Werner und Kuno, to form their own band Midlife Grass. They found the young enthusiastic guitarist Mateo Castillo to make up a foursome, and in a sly reference to age named themselves "Midlife Grass".

As a consequence of weekly rehearsals in the Hütteldorf suburb of Vienna, Midlife Grass frequently played in the Wolferberg Church, and it was not long before other live concerts all over Austria followed. They often played together with Nugget and ever since this period there is at least one annual joint concert, the "Vienna Bluegrass Night". The CD "Four Men on a Mountain" appeared in 1998, a labour of love and patience despite the fact that Wolfgang was gravely ill.

Having undergone some personnel changes following Wolfgang’s death in January, 1999, the group continued its live performances, also extending outside of Austria, e.g. the annual European World of Bluegrass, held in various countries including the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Germany. The band's current members have been together since 2oo5 and continue to play together enthusiastically. The new CD "Breeze of Midlife" bears witness to their unbroken love of Bluegrass music.
